Noisy Workplaces put Workers at Greater Risk of Heart Disease
Contrary to popular belief, noise at work doesn’t just affect hearing – it can also put your heart at risk.
A recent study published in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine suggests that employees who are exposed to high levels of noise while on the job are more likely to develop high cholesterol and high blood pressure. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), high blood pressure and high cholesterol are major contributors to cardiovascular disease. Excessive...
USA – Employers Must Take Active Role in Opioid Crisis Prevention
Employers are being urged to do more to prevent opioid misuse in their workforce, after President Trump declared a public health emergency, and labelled the national opioid epidemic as the “worst drug crisis in American history.”
The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) found that over 42,000 Americans died from opioid-related overdoses in 2016. 40 percent of these deaths involved prescription painkillers. In a 2014 study, the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Adm...
UK: Brexit’s Looming Impact on Health and Safety
Brexit is currently a hot topic in the UK, and after Theresa May declared her plans for the UK to leave the single market, many people are rightly concerned about the wider impact it will have on businesses. And while the decision will have a huge impact on the entire nation, questions are beginning to be asked as to how this divorce will specifically affect the UK’s health and safety regulations.
David Davis, speaking to an audience in Vienna, insisted that Brexit would not lead to insuffici...
NIOSH Tackles Safety of Workplace Robots
Robots are entering the 21st century workplace in greater numbers than ever before.
Technology has become dramatically more sophisticated over the last few decades, and conventional industrial robots working in isolation have evolved into smarter, collaborative robots that are working alongside or being worn by workers.
However, the benefits and risks of these new, and often complex, interactions have not been fully investigated. To address potential problems, The National Institute for Occup...

A new report by the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found occupational exposures may have contributed to anywhere from 11 percent to 21 percent of all asthma-related deaths among people aged 15-64 between 1999 and 2016.
Researchers discovered that 14,296 men and 19,011 women died from asthma over this period. The occupations associated with the most deaths were construction for men, and health care for women. Further to this, researchers found that the industries wit...

Learning a Language
I hated learning French at school. Learning languages seemed like an unrelenting circus of panic revision for vocabulary tests, and dense, nonsensical grammar rules. Hell, basically. And, unless they spoke another language at home, everyone else seemed to find it equally taxing. Spanish was slightly better, but I still felt embarrassed when I had to speak up in class, and was so bored by learning about how to order in restaurants, or say the words ‘post office’ and ‘ham sandwich’. It didn’t feel relevant to my life. And so I put the whole foreign languages thing on ice.

On Racialized Citizenship: The History of Black colonialism in Liberia
CERS Working Paper 2015 | Today, Liberia is criticized for having citizenship based racial criteria; that is, only black people may become citizens, and, by extension, own property. This is the starting point for an enquiry into the history of the state of Liberia, and how this mandate appears in light of Liberia's past.
Why #BLM UK is Important: Not just an American Issue
Make no mistake, people have been brutalised and even killed by police for being black in the UK. BME people make up a third of London’s population, but are 55 per cent of the alleged victims of police brutality by Met officers. And statistics released by The Institute of Race Relations show that 57 per cent of people who died after police contact between 1991 and 2014 were black or black British. Although people aren’t being shot at by trigger happy cops, they have instead been neglected, restrained or strangled to death.
